Hello again

How are you all? It's been a while. Lots of new people too, so hello to you. I just thought I'd send you a little message to let you know what's going on, and bring you exciting news, should you be excited by such things. We are.

We've been a bit busy on other (non-music) projects and haven't been able to gig for a while since Chris moved away. But things have still been happening.

I've nearly finished a film – a feature length comedy that'll be out on DVD in the summer, and Lemanis feature heavily on the soundtrack. You can watch the trailer here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llcUotzy0vo

We're likely to be joined by some very exciting bands on the soundtrack album - to be released on Genepool Records – watch this space!

Also, I can announce plans to record our 3rd album very soon. Nick and I have some new songs on the way I'm sure you'll like as much as, if not more, than the last ones.

Well, that's what we've been doing. What have you been doing? Tell me – phil@lemanis.net - and whoever tells me something they've been doing that makes me grin, laugh, smirk or smile the most, or just that I think is extra good, I'll send you a copy of whichever Lemanis album you want. Email me.

See you after the break.

Phil & Lemanis

Hey hey all you wonderful people.

Thanks for your emails after the last mailout. Much appreciated. Keep 'em coming.

I think I made a small mistake. It seems that the website I sent you to to get your free albums was exclusive to USA computers, so only a few people on the list would have been able to do it. Sorry, I didn't know. Honest. How about free festival tickets instead? Yar? Good.

Anyone go to the Volksfest last year? Good festival that. This year's Volksfest dates are 22-25 May at Newnham Park, Plymouth. We're playing there on the Sunday, this year in the acoustic tent – still with a big old line up. Just doing things a bit differently, because we can.

Other bands at the fest include Dreadzone, the Stereo MCs, Mad Dog McCrea and loads of others – full details here: http://www.plymouthvolksfest.co.uk/index1.htm Gate tickets are £30. 2 lucky Lemanis.net members will be going for free. You? Maybe. Read on children...

So, you want to win a free pair of tickets to the Volksfest courtesy of Lemanis.net? Yar? All you have to do is reply to either info@lemanis.net or phil@lemanis.net – include your address to post the tickets to, and a few lines explaining yourselves. The winner will be chosen by selecting an email somewhere between at random and how much it amused or entertained me. Feel free to attach pictures of your pretty faces to help sway the decision, but keep them small so they don't clog up my inbox.

The fest is only a couple of weeks away so the winner will be selected soon - get your emails to me now.

Don't forget you can still get both Lemanis CD albums together for super cheap at our myspace – www.myspace.com/lemanisband – but not for long. Don't be missing out. You'll only feel shame and regret

Bye now :-)

Phil

Happy birthday to you!

Happy birthday to you!

Happy birthday dear She-ell

Happy birthday to you!

I can't believe it's been 2 years (to the day, in fact) since we launched our 1st album 'Shell.' The other thing that's hard to believe, but it's great, is the amount of people who were at that show 2 years ago who are still regulars at gigs now. Thanks for sticking with us people, it really is much appreciated. So, for all you Lemanis fans old and new, read on good people.

With all the fun of the new album coming out (congratulations to you people who won the free copies from the last mailout – jiffy bags are in the post), poor old Shell's been feeling a little neglected, so he's having a birthday treat.

This is your chance, should you be quick enough, to download our debut album for virtually nothing. For the next 25 sales (and only 25, hurry!), downloads from our CD baby page here http://cdbaby.com/cd/lemanis have been set to the minimum price we could - $1

At the current exchange rate, that means the whole album download will cost you about 69p. That's all 13 tracks (including Boy Girl Song, Ice Cream Dream, Turtles, Lady etc) downloaded to your computer for just 69p. Here:

http://cdbaby.com/cd/lemanis

Just click the link on the left when you get there. It's really easy, fast and safe. Be quick though, as soon as 25 people have downloaded it it'll be going back to normal price of $14.97 - don't miss out!

Anyone in the world can download the album for $1 so be quick – we're just giving you guys on the mailing list the heads up to say thank you.

So go here, now before it's too late!:

http://cdbaby.com/cd/lemanis

Enjoy Shell, we're still very proud of it.

Phil & Lemanis

Keep an eye on these mails for some exciting upcoming give-aways. If you don't want them, you can unsubscribe by emailing info@lemanis.net.

PS. http://cdbaby.com/cd/lemanis – Shell for 69p! --- Shell for $1! --- Shell for Australian $1.45 --- Shell for 74 Euros, --- Shell for 0.00141767 ounces of gold! Fact that. Shell for the enhancement of your life. Enjoy you lucky lucky 25 people :-)

Happy Birthday Shell.

Album Give-away!

Hey, Phil from Lemanis here again.

Here's an interesting story. I was speaking to Giles yesterday about what we could do to say thanks to everyone on the mailing list for signing up over the last few months and, it appears from the evidence presented, actually reading and enjoying these things. Giles had a really good idea. That surprised me for 2 reasons – firstly, he's never come up with a good idea before, and secondly, being my goldfish, he shouldn't technically be able to talk.

But what he appeared to mouth at me from within his tank was this:

Album give-away competition!

And so that is what we're doing.

We're giving away 3 copies of the new album 'The Truth About a Push Me Pull You' as prizes in this competition. Let me guess your thoughts now. “Cool!” Did I get it? Well, cooler still, one of you will also win a copy of both albums in a jiffy bag with a few other Lemanis bits and bobs delivered to your door, all in a package small enough to fit through your letterbox so you can avoid the trek out to the post office to pick it up. How nice are we?

All you have to do to be in the running for these free albums is email info@lemanis.net (the more cunning members here will just click 'reply' now) with the answer to the following ridiculous question:

Both Lemanis albums have a song about an animal called Wesley. What kind of household pet is Wesley?

a) A Human Being b) A Dog (A Witch's Dog) c) A Walrus

Also include your postal address so we know where send the prizes to should you be a winner. For obvious reasons, your entry won't be much good without it.

That's all for today. Get them answers to us now, the deadline is whenever I decide to randomly choose the winning emails, and I'm not feeling very patient.

Cheers all

Phil & Giles

If you don't want these fantastic emails you can unsubscribe by emailing info@lemanis.net with the word 'unsubscribe' in the heading. Entering the competition in the same email would be cheeky.

PS. All your details are safe with us and will not be shared ever. They're safe with us.

PPS The answer's B. Click reply now and tell me, win the CDs!

March 09:

Wow, what a gig.

Thanks to everyone who came down and made it the amazing night it was. If you missed it, I'm sorry, I tried.

For those of you who were there, take a moment to look back and marvel at the gig that was, and spare a thought for those not as fortunate as us who missed it. But allow yourself to grin smugly, it's ok to do so.

Those of you who did miss it without valid reason, take a moment to feel the regret, look at your feet, mime the words 'I'm sorry,' and return back to the message having learned your lesson. Go on, I'll wait. It's for your own good.

Back? Good. I hope you feel better now.

And having then learned from the past, we can now move on to the future, which, as chance would have it, includes this Thursday.

Have you ever been to the B Bar in Plymouth? The little bar attached to the Barbican Theatre. It's class. Little round glass tables to sit around drinking your favourite drinks, chatting to your mates and being entertained by some quality acts, normally a solo guy or duo. I can almost hear it now. This Thursday (12th March), the same little round glass tables will be there to place your favourite drinks on, and your friends will be sat around them with you as normal, only this time the quality duo has been replaced by a band who'll spill off the stage and onto the little glass tables themselves. Can you guess who that might be?

Yup, even we don't yet know how many of the band will be descending on the B Bar on Thursday, but my guess is 7-9. It's kind of an acoustic gig but not as you know it, and we'll be playing all evening, all your Lemanis favourites plus a few choice covers.

Entry is only 2 pounds, possibly the cheapest gig in town. Doors open at 8. The venue is quality, be there, love it.

Must run, I have cookies to eat and a mouth to eat them with - another lucky coincidence. See ya Thursday.

Phil & Lemanis

Here ya go, your free tickets to the album launch gig on Saturday. Read on to find how to get into the venue for free. I don't know if you've begun to notice some very excited people, I have. I'm one of them.

The CDs have arrived, all shiny and pretty, and my house is full of boxes. Luckily, every CD that gets bought now will make my house slightly easier to walk around, and your places will become adorned with shiny new CD's full of the musical goodness that is 'The Truth About a Push Me Pull You.'

The gig this Saturday will be a 13 piece show playing loads of songs from the new album and some from our first album 'Shell.' Support is from Head of Programmes. It's at The Hippo (formerly The Hub), Plymouth. Doors open at 8pm. It's going to be a lot of fun. The venue is also putting on some cheap drinks offers for this event, the lovely helpful people they are. Don't get excited too quickly mind, there's still a couple of days to go, and you need to sleep.

To get in free you will need to arrive before 9pm clutching in your grubby little paws a printout of this email, and show it to the good people on the front door. This will entitle you to free entry for you and one friend. Please try and bring a print out, but if you struggle to find a printer in time, worry not, but before midday on Saturday email info@lemanis.net with your name and your friend's name and we'll make sure you get in. Print it out now, the sooner you print it out the sooner you can walk around with it and get even more excited about the gig on Saturday.

And that's all. Apart from you guys in the USA, who are excused this time, we'll see you all there, bright and early on Saturday for all the fun that is the Lemanis album launch. Thanks people :-)

Phil

PS. Make sure you get the Plymouth Herald on Friday 27th for a write up of the gig and album, and to see some pictures of our very pretty faces.

Pushmi Pullu Album Launch mailout:

Smile!

It's our album launch next week, and we want you all to come.

Why? Well, there's an interesting question. Why do we want lots of people to come and see us play?

I'm not sure how or why I ended up asking myself that question, but today I did, and now I'm going to try to answer it. I can't speak for all 13 of us, I'm sure everyone's reasons are quite different, but we all want you all to come and see us play.

It's definitely not for the money. If it was we'd be charging you to get in, not giving you all free tickets for you and your friends as we are. Also, normally I'd never want to have to stand up in front of potentially hundreds of people and have them all look at me, that's scary. And yet given the choice of 40 or 400 people there watching us play a show, we'd choose 400. If it was because we wanted to know all these people were hearing what our hard work had come to, we could give out more CDs without the potential risk of messing up on a stage. So why are we looking forward to this gig so much, and why do we want you all there?

I think I worked it out yesterday morning after getting back from our live slot on the Gordon Sparks show on Radio Devon (thanks Gordon & Stuart, it was much fun).

The reason that kept coming back was this: At certain points in our set, we can look down and see a smile on the face of pretty much everyone in site. Sometimes its because of the music we're playing, sometimes someone's fooling around on stage, or sometimes we just plain mess up. Its nice to know we caused those smiles and all that fun. And for some reason the psychology books will probably tell us, the more smiley faces we see, the better it is. You've probably never noticed, you're looking the wrong way to see, but we do.

So there you have it, my reason for asking you all to join us. Plus of course my friends will think I'm cool if there's loads of people there, and the promoter will be happy.

So yeah. Saturday 28th we're launching our 2nd album, 'The Truth About a Push Me – Pull You”. Be there, maybe we can make you smile.

Phil & Lemanis

P.S. It's at the Hippo (ex-Hub), Plymouth. Sat 28th Feb. Support from Head of Programmes. Doors at 8. FREE ENTRY TICKETS WILL BE MAILED TO YOU WITHIN A FEW DAYS, you'll need to get in before 9 to redeem them.

FEB '09 - The Queen's Reply.

OK, so I got a reply from The Queen.

For those of you new to the mailing list or with poor memories or a form of degenerative disease, a Lemanis demo was posted to the Queen back in October. If you've not seen it, a copy of the letter follows this email.

So what did the ruler of our Empire have to say about the band?

Well, the letter, in all honesty was pretty boring (although the envelope was quite exciting, complete with a Buckingham Palace post mark but sadly no stamp with Her Majesty's face on it). It also addressed me as 'Philip Baker, Esq.' which was exciting. Philip Baker, Esquire. This technically puts me, in terms of social status, one rank below a Knight. Excellent. I'll be riding round on a horse with a sword before you know it.

So what did the letter say? Stop begging, paupers, I'll reveal it all in good time. Us Esquires are busy people, ya know.

OK, here it is. I must point out that, due to the mundaneness of the real letter, much has been left out, re-arranged, and made up to the point of it barely resembling the real thing. I will also gladly point out that at least some of the following words did appear in the letter, some of which were in the order shown below.

Dear Mr. Baker, Esq.

The Queen has asked me to thank you for your letter and I apologise for the delay in replying. [Blah, blah, blah]. Her Majesty was interested [read: uninterested] to learn of Lemanis and thought it very kind of you to send a CD as a gift to The Queen. It is now her favourite choice of music to be played by the DJ at Royal Disco's and Balls, and she particularly enjoys playing the Air Trumpet along to 'Ice Cream Dream.' The Queen has made it a rule...to give her support to...you and your fellow musicians...future success.

Yours sincerely,

Senior Correspondence Officer

There ya go. Exciting, eh?

That wraps that up into a nice neat little package then, which should fit neatly into the rubbish for when the time comes for it to be collected by the Plymouth Bin Men in a few months or years time.

MAILOUT FREEBIE TIME!!!

Better news is that the gig at the Hippo (once known as The Hub) in Plymouth (in which we'll be launching our new album) on Feb 28th is now FREE ENTRY for you good people on the mailing list, and for a friend of yours too. A few days before the show we'll be mailing out free tickets to you all so you and a friend can come for free. There's still time to sign up, so make sure you tell your friends to sign up at www.lemanis.net to get their free tickets. Or just forward this message to everyone you know who's into music.

That's all for today.

Philip Baker, Esquire.

(Mailing list letter from 24/11/08):

Hello all you wonderful friends and fans of Lemanis.

How was that for an opening line? Not bad? 4/10 I reckon. Yeah, not good enough. Scrap that, how about this one instead:

In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf.

Now that is a quality opening line. Unfortunately, I didn't make it up. We all know where it's from, don't deny it. Can I write this newsletter in the form of a caterpillar metaphor? Surely caterpillar metaphors are now clichéd and maybe a little gay?

Well, if some men can wear pink shirts on the grounds that 'I'm so manly I can even wear pink' then I can write in caterpillar metaphors on the grounds that I'm so manly I can even write in caterpillar metaphors. As for the cliché bit, it seems fair enough to me. The close cousin, The Ugly Duckling, falls short by not having the mystical cocoon process separating the ugly baby to the beautiful adult. Also, no sooner has the caterpillar crawled from it's cocoon as a butterfly, it can flap it's wings and cause hurricanes the other side of the world. Now that is a transformation. All from a little egg laying on a leaf in the light of the moon.

Another classic opening line:

Once upon a time, in a land far far away.

It's a bit more intriguing than 'On Thursday, in a venue not so far away' but it's not specific enough to get you there. Can't have everything I suppose. Unless you live in a fairy tale, near the end.

In February we have a new album coming out which contains our very own fairy tale. Its somewhere between a fairy tale and 20 minute song cycle about the plight of a forest. We can't wait to get it out to you, but we have to wait until February. And until then we'll be disappearing from the Plymouth live map for a few months while we do whatever caterpillars do in those cocoons (the Lemanis cocoon will of course have 14 rooms, bar and pool table). But in our last few days as the hairy caterpillar, we've got 2 more little shows for you before we put together the album launch and everything that will come with it.

We're playing as an acoustic 4 piece in the B Bar on December 10th, and before then, THIS THURSDAY 27th November, we're playing in the Plymouth Hub as a 7(ish) piece. Come to this show if you can, its our last amplified one until February. Be warned though we will be on early. Due to other commitments Chris has to leave early so we'll be on either 1st or 2nd – don't miss us. Also playing that night are Rooftop Gambler, Fisherman's Mission and good friends Head of Programmes with his 1st headline show. Nice one James!

I'm off to eat through one apple, 2 pears, 3 plums, 4 strawberries, 5 oranges, chocolate cake, ice-cream cone, a pickle, a slice of Swiss cheese, a slice of salami, a lollipop, a piece of cherry pie, a sausage, a cupcake and a slice of watermelon. See you all at the Hub,

Phil & Lemanis

Halloween Mailout '08:

Wesley! How Dare you!

That's the scream I used to get woken up by every morning a while back when I was lucky enough to live with Mr Nick Lemanis himself. It wasn't Nick yelling of course (he was far too busy doing fun and interesting things to be yelling at Wesley), but an old lady who lived next door. She had 3 dogs, Wesley and 2 others (who's names have been left out to protect the innocent... Innocent you say? I SAW them cr*pping in the yard...). Wesley certainly appeared to be the mischievous trouble maker of the three. My bedroom window overlooked Wesley's yard which meant I was able to ease his pain by throwing him the odd crumb (he must have got hungry sometimes, we all do), but also meant I was pained by the constant, incessant and often satanical yelling at the poor dog. I remember her as being about 160 years old, but in reality she was probably about 45. Forty-five centuries maybe. I hope she's not on this mailing list...

Witch.

Halloween see... Relevance to real life begins...

So one day, probably when drunk on White Horse or Ouzo, Nick suggested writing a song about Wesley. That was a silly idea, I thought, but a few days and a whopping 4 chords later, there it was. Eventually it was recorded for our 1st album 'Shell' and then followed up (not such a bad idea after all Nick) with 'A Witches Dog' on the 2nd album 'The Truth About a Push-Me Pull-You,' due out early '09.

So why this email? Some of you who's addresses I recently stole from facebook friends will be even more confused. Well, serves you right for not signing up yourself. And you call yourself my friend...

Well, the point is this.

Firstly, people often ask what the story behind Wesley is. So there it is. Secondly, as a result of this email you may begin to become aware of a new-found fondness for poor old Wesley and want to sing along loudly to his song. And for this reason, for anyone who wishes to own 'Shell' and sing along to Wesley, go to www.lemanis.net now, sign in to the members area and buy it. Until November 5th (Bonfire night, burn her!) we will donate exactly half the profits of any sales of Shell from www.Lemanis.net to the RSPCA so they can help more animals like Wesley (in all honesty, Wesley wasn't abused, to our knowledge. Lets pretend though, it's fun). It's half price at a fiver to you special ones on the mailing list (yes, that's you if you're reading this), or a tenner if you can't be bothered to sign in.

Let's recap, just like in those books from school:

1: You're now pretty fond of Wesley.

2: There happens to be a song about him on Shell!

3: If you buy Shell from www.lemanis.net right now we'll donate half the profit to the RSPCA, so you'll have done a good deed, as will we, and everyone will be happy. (Except that old lady, who never will be). It's fast and easy, cheap AND for a good cause!

Thanks everyone, you're all super-stars in your own little ways.

Phil (& Lemanis)

P.S. Your password will be 'password' if I signed you up from a list at a gig or just stole your ad from facebook if you're my real life friend there. Go sign in and leave us a message on the message board.

P.P.S. Go and buy Shell right now and do a good thing. It's quick and easy (paypal), and these CD's make excellent Christmas presents too...

The Letter to the Queen

In case any of you were late joining the mailing list and didn't get it, here's the covering letter sent to the Queen along with a demo CD.

Dear Your Majesty The Queen Of England,

Please find enclosed a CD of Plymouth based band Lemanis, which I play bass in. Please take the time to listen to it, I hope you find it enjoyable.

We work very hard and have been thinking of ways to further ourselves. While thinking about this, one question I asked myself was who to turn to for help. The thought hit me then that, if The Queen Of England can't help, then who can? So I was wondering, are you able to help us? I understand that you are a busy person but would greatly appreciate anything you can do for us. Maybe we could film ourselves singing a song in the palace, or have our photographs taken with you? That would be royally cool.

I really hope you like the CD, we put a lot of time and effort into making it. There is more information on the band at www.lemanis.net, if you are interested. I would like to thank you very much for your time.

Yours Sincerely,

Philip Baker

As of yet there's still been no reply, but if we get one I'll keep you all informed.

We now have the new album, 'The Truth About a Push-Me Pull-You' mastered and in our grubby little hands. Keep an eye out for new songs appearing from it online until we can give it the official launch it deserves, due early 2009.

See ya all soon

Phil

New music ahoy!

Yup, the album release has been put back a bit (It's just a little hitch in the masterplan and all that...), but out at the end of November on One.c records is a compilation of sea shanties and other nautical based songs... and guess what... We're on it. We recorded our version of the Traditional shanty 'Santy Anno' for the record which also features friends The Dharma Bums, Fisherman's Mission and Head of Programmes. More details here: www.onec.tv

Now, does anyone want a free copy of our first CD Shell? Well you all do, of course. We're looking to record (film) us singing some acoustic versions of our songs in some interesting places. We're thinking so far in the Museum or the lighthouse, or both. Over to you... where do you want to see us playing a song? Any suggestions we like, we'll make that recording, and send you a free copy of Shell as a thank you. Email your suggestions to info@lemanis.net or leave a note on the message board at www.lemanis.net

Thanks all, see you soon Mateys!

Hey everyone,

Thanks to every legend who came down to see us on Friday at the Voodoo Lounge - hope you all enjoyed the show.

For the first time since we launched the site we haven't posted any upcoming shows. But don't panic, they will appear sometime in the next week. We're just waiting to finalise some details and dates, so keep an eye out for specifics of the album launch party which will be released here soon.

Also, if anyone is interested in getting involved in our promotions team, send an email to either Phil or I for more details. Trust me, it'll be worth it...

Hi Lemanisytes (as in acolytes, not parasites),

We hope you are all well and have had a cracking summer so far. Although festival season is over for us now now :( we had some great weekends and are already looking forward to more mud-fuelled shenanigans next summer.

It's only a matter of weeks until Plymouth welcomes back it's student population, and we at Lemanis will be joining in by playing at the Voodoo Lounge on September 19th - the culmination of a week of Freshers Gigs at one of our favourite venues.

Also playing will be Bristol's own Farthing Wood, Dartington College legends Not Now Bernard, and Dartmoor based songstress Ella Edmondson - we can't wait!

More info nearer the time. And other stuff. Probably.

Hey everyone!

Lemanis head off to the Maker Festival in a couple of days for a fun-filled weekend of frivolous behaviour - can't wait!

We hope that everyone who came to the White Rabbit last Saturday had a good time, we certainly did. Thanks again to the legends from World/Inferno Friendship Society, what a genuinely great bunch of people.

In other news our second album, Push Me Pull You, draws ever closer to completion. This week will be the final studio session before we send the songs off for mastering, so expect to hear more soon.... In the meantime, listen out for excerpts from the album at upcoming shows.

Look forward to seeing you all in the Maker sunshine!!!

Hello. Blog time again already.

2 good gigs in the bag (Volksfest and the Mutley Festival) and we're about to take a short break from gigging (until June 20th) to finally get this album finished.

The album, we can now reveal is to be called Push Me Pull You and will contain the following songs:

Push Me Pull You:

She Always Was A Dreamer, Moon Song, Wishing, A Witch's Dog, Go Blonde, Rub It When It Hurts

The History Songs:

Colosseum, Museum

The Forest Songs:

Across The Bridge, Loving Her Forest When, WoodShop/It's Lovely to Have Money, Mr. Mills.

The Forest songs are 5 parts of one big song about the demise of a fictional forest. It's been a bit of a mammoth task assembling this 20 minute monster, but its nearly there (AND it's not rubbish!) and we're one big happy band at the moment :-)

See you all at the Hub on 20th June for the Summer Party.

Hey hey!

It's been a while since the first entry and we've been very busy in the last month or so...

The website launch gig went down really well, thanks for everyone who came along to support us. Check out the video of 'Lady' from that night on the home page - the camera quality was a little poor but thanks to Ben for filming it for us - it's better than anything we had before!

After our afternoon slot in the Guildhall main hall for the 'Love Music Hate Racism' festival (loads of fun...) we've taken a step back from gigging for a few weeks to concentrate on the second album.

And it's almost done!! Most of the songs are pretty much recorded except for a few horns and strings, and then it's on to the long process of mixing them down. Somehow we might even be on schedule...

Next show is this Saturday at the Volksfest - that's the 3 day event in Newnham Park, Plymouth. There will be loads of great bands playing all weekend, so be there if you can!

Also, get your friends to sign up to the members area - as soon as we reach our first target number we'll start competitions and prize draws, can't wait!
